edamo, let's talk about oil. the prices have been depressed for some time. why? lack of demand (relative to supply) in asia. doh! amazing. now that the price is going up, there will be less demand than there otherwise would have been (all else being equal).

if housing prices dropped 20% tomorrow, demand would skyrocket!

gold is a slightly different issue. why? b/c all else being equal doesn't apply to gold. momo mentality is such that stocks or gold or other investments that have gone up are worth more. amzn now is seen as 50 times the company it was two years ago. the ignoati are wrong, but reality doesn't matter - their wrong perception does.

if everyone's attitude toward gold remained exactly the same and the price went up then demand for gold would go down.

absolutely.

economic theory applies to nearly everything.

it gets skewed sometimes due to extremely dynamic perception changes.

pc's will not be seen as more valuable if the price goes up. it isn't an investment (eg, gold, momo stocks, etc.).
