An AT&T executive is out to quash rumors. His specific denial included: "There've been no discussions underway whatsoever. I typically don't comment on things of that sort, but when it's absurd, I do....No, they haven't talked for many months, so nothing is in the works."

Will I believe that AT&T is not involved in these negotiations? I'll buy it. AT&T may not be involved in these discussions, but AtHome gave me the impression that they were still talking to AOL when I last spoke to them. If AT&T is involved in these discussions, and a deal happens, they would be in a lot of trouble for denying it. Is this a spin like the one we got from Microsoft? Probably not.

Are discussions going on between Excite AtHome and AOL? My primary source, contacted within the past hour, reports that "it appears they are still talking." He says that a deal will happen by Monday morning if it is to get done this round.

This AT&T executive does give me some reason to doubt my sources. However, they have been credible in the past, even when companies deny the rumors. So for now, I'll stick by my sources
