ABX, IBM Expand Alliance

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX - news), the world's No. 2 gold mining company, and International
Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - news), the No. 3 PC maker, Monday said they had agreed to a new $6 billion deal in which IBM will become a key supplier of computers to ABX and ABX will become the prime supplier of gold for IBM's chip business.

According to IBM CEO Lou Gerstner: "Following exhaustive purity tests we found that there was no gold purer than ABX gold. It is for this reason that we chose to partner with ABX."

According to an unnamed spokesperson at ABX: "Our employees are looking forward to the new IBM computers so that they can get faster quotes on their stock portfolios and play DOOM when the boss isn't looking."

Executives at IBM laud that pact for its forward looking blah, blah, blah . . .
