Unfortunately, having found the beginnings of a couple of his books unengaging (perhaps it was me), I have never finished one of them, and I missed the film of the Tin Drum. Therefore, I would be judging mainly on reviews and articles about him. I have the sense that he may have been politically destructive, but that does not mean that he does not deserve the prize on strictly literary grounds. I cannot say much, but would be interested in your appraisal....
