Nokia and RITT Co-Operate on 3rd Generation
Technology Testing in China


HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1999--Nokia and RITT (Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission) have signed a co-operation agreement to further the development of Third Generation mobile communications in China.

According to the agreement, RITT and Nokia will set up and operate an experimental field trial based on Nokia's WCDMA system. The system will be used for evaluation of the technology in a real operation environment, as well as
demonstration and evaluation of new value-added services and applications.

RITT is a non-commercial institute of the Ministry of Information Industries (MII). RITT plays a central role in coordinating the technical specification and standardization work on telecommunication technologies in China.

The Nokia WCDMA experimental field system will be installed in Beijing. The system is composed of network equipment, software and mobile terminal prototypes needed to allow thorough testing of coverage, speed, handovers,power control and general functionalities. The system will be delivered in October 1999 and testing will start later this year.

``With this partnership, Nokia and RITT will together develop WCDMA technologies to meet the needs of the Chinese
market,' says James Lin, General Manager, Nokia (China) Investment Co. Ltd.This co-operation will help support a future smooth introduction of 3rd Generation services in China.'
The partners will also co-operate on key technology development of WCDMA networks and services. The partners will also share the results of the joint system testing work.

WCDMA standard has now been successfully harmonised under the IMT-2000 concept for 3rd Generation Mobile Systems.

end-user, 3rd Generation Services will bring truly advanced mobile applications such as videotelephony, infotainment,
mobile Internet and intranet access.
