I read some updated news reports and it seems that workers put too much U235 into a vessel and there may have been a criticality event which started the whole fiasco. But it was short lived and not a runaway meltdown (likely not enough fuel around for that). If so, those poor workers in the area are dead men walking. Sounds like US armed forces are going to help to clean things up.

Doesn't seem like it should have a long term effect on economy. Besides, what are they going to do - give up nuclear power? That would kill their economy.
