Mexico Quake Seen In Seven Range On Richter Scale

GOLDEN, Colo. (Reuters) - A major earthquake felt in Mexico City Thursday was in the seven range on the open-ended Richter scale, a spokesman for the National Earthquake Center said.

Seismologist John Minch said the earthquake was capable of causing extensive damage and loss of life in densely populated areas. He said it would be some time before an exact measurement and the epicenter could be determined.

Nuclear-japan-uranium Tokyo

Japanese media quoted an official at the plant operator JCO Co, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co, as saying that one of the workers said he used about 16 kg of uranium -- nearly eight times the normal amount -- during the process just before the accident.

Workers normally use up to 2.3 kg of uranium in each procedure to prevent a criticality accident, they said.

A Japanese Defense Agency official said the agency had contacted the U.S. military forces in Japan to see if they could assist but were told that the U.S. forces here did not have the necessary equipment for such an incident.

Government spokesman Hiromu Nonaka said there was a strong possibility that the ''criticality incident'' at the plant was still continuing within the facility. Criticality is the point at which a nuclear chain reaction becomes self-sustaining, similar to what occurs inside a nuclear reactor.
