Intel knows chip fabrication better than anyone else. They are only average (IMO) in the board design area, and below average at systems design. They don't do software. Who tests the end-to-end integration of these servers? End users.

Sun covers the entire system: chip design (SPARC), System Hardware (Enterprise etc) and software, and them make all of them work together. Sun does not fab their own silicon , they let Texas Instruments do that. Hence my wild thought that maybe both Sun and Intel would benefit from a fabrication agreement. Leaving Microsoft where?

I have a high respect for anyone who attempts to build an N-way server system. It's a job way beyond my ability. However, at least I know I can't do the job: I leave it to the experts.
