There is a river, along which one might try to military divide into a North and South part. Taking the easier northern part won't help against rebels in Daghestan, however. OTOH, as we know, it won't be fought about Daghestan or Chechnya, but about Moscovites. So the scenario might go o.k.
As I see it, a won war (if that was possible, it doesn't seem to be) is maybe less useful for Putin's (and Yeltsin's) home position than a lukewarmly on-going war.

Time to open a Chechnya thread ? :-).
