OT: I used to know all this stuff when I worked at San Onofre outside LA. Forgotten the technical explanation suince then.

Reactors glow a beautiful blue color when they are active. It is a byproduct of a nuclear reaction. You NEVER want to see it unless you are well shielded because it means you are being exposed to lethal doses of radiation. The fact that they took sick so quickly confirms that it was probably this light they saw. I seriously doubt any of them will live long.
