T simply said they were exploring the option of selling excite.

I am amazed at how the market reacts. Too many credible sources said something was brewing. Maybe it won't pan out, but certainly something is in the works.

As far as AOL goes.....If I were Armstrong, I would want AOL on my side. Instant 18 milion potential customers. Why would they want to shun AOL, who has the content and the eyeballs. They have deals with lots of baby bells and can currently do broadband in 60% of U.S., I think. They have dsl, which T does not...and what about wireless broadband??

The best thing for everybody is to ink a deal. I am betting that armstrong and case are smart folks.

See the official announcement right here. No need to wonder and guess.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1999-- AT&T today issued the following statement in light of continuing rumors:

"We have periodically explored, and we continue to explore, many alternatives with respect to our Internet strategy and our ownership interest in Excite@Home. The alternatives include internal options as well as discussions with third parties. The exploration of alternatives remains at the very preliminary stage, and at this time, AT&T has not made any decision to pursue any particular alternative or transaction. There is no assurance that any transaction will occur, and we do not intend to comment further unless and until we decide definitively to proceed with one or more alternatives, if any."

Has there been any discussion of aapl buying excite? I heard somewhere that aapl was considering getting back into the portal biz. Perhaps, a good platform to promote their QT4 streaming content and applications.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am long athm, aol, rnwk and as of today aapl.

That's very interesting, I would think T is trying to sell the Excite portion of Excite@Home, probably because AOL wants to buy ATHM, but wants no part of Excite! This is getting more interesting with every passing moment...the drama continues to build :)
