I wasn't thinking of the end of colonialism in America; rather the rapid dismantling of empire before/during/after WWII

I don't think the problems that attended decolonization were a consequence of excessive rapidity. There were plenty of other factors involved, not the least of which was the interference of foreign powers that were more interested in scoring cold-war points than in fostering development in the former colonies.
