Akula, your response about the length of time for breastfeeding reminded me of a good friend of mine. Her son was 3 years old and she was trying to wean him. She finally realized that she had to ignore the temper tantrums. But the boy would climb up to where ever she was sitting, grab both sides of her shirt and rip it open, popping all the buttons off, and try to grab whatever he could. I remember telling her that she'd better break that habit soon, or the kindergarten teacher was going to have a real problem on her hands.

The medical community is always changing. Even at the time I had my children, many people saw breastfeeding as some sort of obscene behavior. Many of the women of my mother's generation were very prudish, and would never even consider breastfeeding.
