Sept. 30 ? A nuclear reaction at a uranium processing plant
in Japan has been brought under control, but officials told
more than 300,000 people to stay indoors, closed nearby
schools and told farmers to stop harvesting.
At least 39 people were
exposed to radiation in the
accident. Two of them,
workers at the plant, were in
critical condition with severe
symptoms of radiation
exposure such as vomiting
and diarrhea. They were
taken in protective covering
to a special hospital for
radiation victims. Three of the
exposed were firemen said to
have been contaminated
when they carried victims
away.
The regional governor said
the reaction was brought
under control almost 20 hours
after the accident. ?The
prefecture received confirmation at 6:15 a.m. that the chain
reaction has been halted,? Gov. Masaru Hashimoto said Friday
Japan time.
