Your question is certainly fair. . .but my purchase of MKTY is based more on growth and potential earnings on the fuel cell craze than on current valuation. As a speculator, my bet is two-fold. . .that word will spread on the coming Plug Power IPO, which should bid both MKTY and DTE up sharply. . . and on the fuel cell mania that I believe will unfold as Plug Power comes closer to market. . . I would suspect some CNBC interviews, etc. . . and there are essentially 3 different companies involved here. . . Detroit Power helped start Plug Power to be a dominant fuel cell maker. . . MKTY was already heavily into fuel cell technology and I believed they have investments in other fuel cell companies. . .making them a sort of CMGI of the fuel cell world. Then MKTY bought a major share in Plug Power, with payment not due until the day of the IPO. . .what a sweet deal. This was a boring company with average revs, earnings, etc. . . but I see them as getting sexier by the minute. But then, I am very high on the fuel cell becoming an important fixture in new homes. My next home will absolutely be powered by them. . . I have lost too much electronic equipment to power surges, so to me they will pay for themselves many times over in savings. I also believe that fuel cells will grab the attention of the American public at some time in the near future. . . it will take some magazine articles and TV coverage, but that is easy enough. . . Another reason. . .today's big jump in price confirms that some fund managers are eyeing MKTY in much the same way. . . and bought in [as window dressing] today in a big way, because they believe this will be a big winner, too. So with these event-driven factors being so strong, I basically do a quick glance at financials to make sure they are not about to go under, then ignore them and go with the pending factors as a basis for my position. So in placing my own personal valuation on them. . .it is again event-driven. . .not financial. . .so I expect that about the day they release Plug Power in an IPO, I'll be selling MKTY and trying every which way to get some Plug Power cheaply. If you don't know, Plug Power makes the GE Fuel Cells. . .and recently built a new factory for fuel cell manufacturing. They will be the only true pure play Fuel Cell manufacturer in America. . . and I believe that will mean some mutual fund dough invested rather quickly. I guess lately I'm trying to figure out what the high-fliers of spring 2000 will be. . . .and taking positions early enough to see the sort of gains that RNWK, EXDS, NSOL, INKT and DCLK yielded last year. I believe most of the new high fliers will be from our broadband basket. . .but that there will be a few big stocks that are totally unrelated to the internet. . . . and that, too is an appeal that Plug Power has. . . .it ISN'T internet.
