I agree with the timing of the launch part, but I don't think what AMD did was a screw up. The only option that AMD had was to announce shipment of Athlon in the end of June to convince the motherboard makers to commit to Athlon. AMD had to go through this awkward launch because of it's past poor performance, limited resources, and it's competitive position. Once, Dresden and the infrastructure with AMD partners is in place, AMD will be in a position to have Intel type product launches. AMD has always maintained that OEMs would release the Athlon systems in the later part of September. Also, if you go back to June, Sharkey commented that Athlon CPUs will not be available to DIY market until Q1,00. But, here we are at the end of Q3-99, and we know that there is a good supply of all speed grades of Athlon and the motherboards in DIY market. IMHO, so far, AMD's execution of producing Athlons has been exceptional.
