OCT 1, 1999, M2 Communications - The Swedish telecoms solutions
provider Ericsson has received a contract for a Next Generation Network
solution from the Dutch operator KPN International. Ericsson is to
provide a solution for integrating voice and datacom services in KPN's
European network for France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The
solution is to be based on Ericsson's ATM switch AXD 301 and Telephony
Server. Ericsson is also to expand the GSM network of the Polish
operator Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa. The contract for the expansion,
valued at around SEK660m, includes base stations, base station
controllers, MINI-LINK microwave transport solutions and services as
well as mobile switching centers and home location registers. Ericsson
Telebit A/S, a recently acquired Danish subsidiary of Ericsson, is to
provide third-generation hybrid switch-routers for a UK travel agent
and tour operator booking network. The network is being developed by
the travel technology provider X-TANT. Currently around 65% of UK's
electronically traded package holidays are carried over the X-TANT
network. In other news it has been reported that Ericsson has formed a
new division in the UK. The new UK division, Ericsson Converged
Networks, will provide IP networks to mobile and telecom operators and
Internet Service Providers based in the UK. Ericsson also recently
introduced the world's smallest GSM phone. The T28 World is 2.5 by 1.3
by 0.4 inches and weighs under three ounces.
