On that war note, INVN news>> InVision Technologies Subsidiary Successfully Completes Landmine Detection System Field Trials in Bosnia Prototype Proves "Simple to Operate & Reliable" Under Actual Field Conditions, Shows Promise As "First Real Technological Breakthrough in Mine Detection" NEWARK, Calif.-Oct. 1, 1999-- InVision Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:INVN - news) today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Quantum Magnetics, successfully completed field trials sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of its Phase I mine detection system prototype. The tests were conducted near mined areas surrounding Tuzla, Bosnia. In a blind test in unprepared soil, the system found six antipersonnel mine-like targets (including one metal-encased mine and five mines that contained the explosive RDX) and two RDX antitank mine-like targets. All of the false alarms that occurred were cleared quickly when the area was rescanned. A metal detector used on this same area suffered 34 false alarms that required manual clearance. Quantum demonstrated the system under actual field conditions that included 90(Degree)F heat and constant rain. The company also collected valuable data about soil conditions and other environmental factors at known mine fields in the area. As stated in a press release issued yesterday by DARPA (http://www.darpa.mil/news.html), Gunnery Sergeant John Crane of the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, VA, operated the system during the tests and noted, ''I found the system simple to operate and reliable, detecting both explosive and metal targets. It has the ability to resolve false alarms when they occur, which is a real advantage when searching for landmines.''
