Being that they played different positions you might find those that will argue which is #1. I'm of the belief they both brought something special to the game. There were none better at possessing the puck. They were masters.
Orr, when he went on offence there was no one better at splitting a defence. I can't count how many times he drew a penalty trying to split the defence. And all because of how quickly he reached full stride. Being a defenceman gave Orr a certain advantage IMO. He had the option of going on the offence, depending on what the oposition left him. As it is, most great skaters on defence seldom get checked when there on the offence, for fear of getting caught out of position.
Because of Orr's abilities he was granted even more respect. And took full advantage. Not to undermine his masterful ability to maintain possession.
Gretz on the other hand was the best playmaker the game has ever had. He managed to play his career in the red zone, dodge checks, and still manage to make plays. Quite an achievment in my view.
Tiger Williams once said checking Wayne Gretzky was like checking a pillow. You never make full contact.

Hey,what did you think of the first 4 on 4 overtime? Unfortunately I caught only 3 minutes of regulation and all of the OT but from what I saw it looked pretty exciting.
Gave me the feeling they were both on the powerplay. Should be an interesting year with this new rule change. Oilers look like there right on track.
