More evidence of Growth...

Worldwide Chip Sales Rise 22% In Aug. To $11.96B - SIA

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Semiconductor Industry Association said worldwide semiconductor sales in August rose 22% to $11.96 billion from a year ago.

In a press release Friday, the association said continued growth shows that the industry is sustaining the upturn that began in mid-1998.

The association said Japanese and Asian Pacific markets led the rise, with Japan's sales growing 31.7% to $2.64 billion and Asia Pacific's rising 30.1% to $2.94 billion.

Sales in the Americas market rose 18.1% to $3.92 billion from last year, while European sales increased 9.9% to $2.45 billion.

The association said the semiconductor market recovery is being driven by PCs, communications products, and the popularity of the Internet.

The PC market, the semiconductor industry's largest consumer, which is normally sluggish in the third quarter, expects a 25% growth in demand, compared to the year-ago third quarter, the association said.

Spot market sales for DRAMs are also strong.
