Gary, this subject is only beginning to gain the recognition it deserves for its full import in the IP space. Earlier considerations for a universal address tracking system were conceived in the ATM model, prior to the proliferation of IP. For an interesting glance at some of these considerations, see the following which I just now pulled out of the air by doing a search:

multimedia.itek.norut.no

In particular, see section 3.5 re: 3.5 ARP and ARP Servers

Should we be concerned with such ATM "entanglements" when discussing this topic? I think so, if, for no other reason than, because of the growing number of dsl and other last mile services which are based on end point directories based on ATM NSAPs .

Addresses and directory-based translations/resolving will abound, IMO, and the complexity of the directory task will increase, accordingly. If you or someone else here, or lurkers looking in, are versed in these matters I'd like to hear from you or them. What say?

Regards, Frank Coluccio

You are right. This area must be conquered, with network oriented directory services, and a lot of additional privacy functions. SIP was introduced with some extensions to work in this area at the VON conference. It was nice to hear this issue being addressed.
