(PR Wires) PRW: Franklin Telecom Installs OC-48 Expansion; Meets Need f PRW: Franklin Telecom Installs OC-48 Expansion; Meets Need for Additional DS-3 Capability WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1999--Franklin Telecom (AMEX:FCM) Friday announced that installation is complete on an expansion of its Network Operations Center (NOC). In 1996, GTE, at its own expense, ran optical fiber into Franklin's Westlake Village headquarters. (NOTE: OC stands for Optical Carrier; OC-48 is the equivalent of 48 DS-3s. DS stands for Digital Signal; DS-3 is the equivalent of 28 T1s. A T1 can handle 24 simultaneous transmissions of voice, fax or data.) Although Franklin only required the use of OC-3 capacity in 1996, the original installation had the capacity to expand to OC-24. During the last two years, demand has increased until more DS-3 lines are required to satisfy customer requirements. Therefore GTE returned to install the OC-48. To explain this expanded capacity another way, employing traditional switch technology, Franklin's NOC can now handle more than 32,000 simultaneous toll quality calls. However, as a Next Generation Telephone Company, Franklin also uses compression to maximize bandwidth. This expands the number of possible calls by approximately 8 times -- or to more than 250,000 simultaneous voice connections. Each call coming into the Network Operations Center is automatically evaluated to determine its best route -- in other words, whether the call can be terminated more efficiently via traditional switch or through packetized compression. The call is then completed using best cost routing. According to Michael Peters, vice president of e-Commerce and Enhanced Services, the switchover to the OC-48 was accomplished earlier this week without any interruption to existing service. "The important issue," he went on to say, "is that we have greatly increased the size of customer base we can handle and of the potential revenues this customer base will engender."
