ted,

Another interesting article related to Intel's Web hosting plans -

Analysts Skeptical Of Intel's Hosting Play
By Timothy Long Irvine, Calif. 9:04 AM EST Fri., Oct.01, 1999
crn.com

Excerpted from the article -

... "I think that Intel is completely misguided in its move to Web hosting," said Howard Anderson, an analyst with the Forrester Research Inc., Cambridge, Mass. "Intel does not have the customer relationships; Intel does not have experience in this business. I think their desire is that they would like to provide the servers in this market, but people like Exodus and others in this market I think are going to hand them their rear end."

... Forrester analyst Carl Howe said the chip maker's mistake is its attempt to approach the Web hosting business like a manufacturing enterprise. "They're trying to recreate the [business] model of the modern PC... and trying to leverage that into the hosting business," he said. "I think it's going to be a very big wake up call for them, because I don't think it's going to work."

... The Web hosting market nearly doubled from 1997 to 1998, jumping to $951 million from $486, according to Dataquest, San Jose, Calif. This year, Forrester estimates the market to be $2 billion, growing to $14.6 billion by 2003.

World Chip Sales Surge 22 Percent, Totaling $11.96 Billion For August

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1999--Worldwide sales of
semiconductors jumped to $11.96 billion in August, increasing 3.5%
from July, 1999 totals, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA)
reported today.
''The global sales increased 22% from August 1998,'' said George
Scalise, SIA President. ''This acceleration in growth is another
strong indicator that the industry is sustaining the upturn that
started in mid-1998.''
The year-to-year chip sales exhibited dramatic growth in the Japan
and Asia markets with 31.7% and 30.1% increases, respectively. The
Americas market remained very strong with sales increasing 18.1% over
last year. Europe's sales increased 9.9% from August, 1998 continuing
its solid growth pattern.
The PC market, which is the largest consumer of semiconductors, is
normally sluggish in the third quarter. However, this year the unit
demand for PCs is expecting to grow 25% over the 1998 third quarter,
and a 7% increase from second quarter 1999 according to International
Data Corp. The spot market sales for DRAMs is up substantially. In some cases,
the spot market for DRAMs has doubled since mid-year according to
GartnerGroup's Dataquest.
''As we enter the fourth quarter, we are witnessing our first double-
digit annual growth since 1995. In addition to PCs, the semiconductor
market recovery is being driven by communications products, the
pervasiveness of the Internet and the E-commerce explosion,'' stated Scalise.
The SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three month rolling average
of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor
Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represent some 70
companies. The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor
industry and has represented US-based manufacturers since 1977. SIA
member companies compromise more than 90 percent of US-based
semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip industry employs a
domestic workforce of 276,000 people. August 1999 BillionsMonth-to-Month Sales
