rude "China may have more than a billion people but only about 1 in 10,000"

your calculation would mean that 100 thousand can afford. But this is not at all correct.

Computers in China are NOT being pruchased primarily by individuals but by BUSINESSES and COOPERATIVES. The cooperatives (still communistic by the way) are purchasing computers for each individual family within their cooperative even though the family in that cooperative only shows an income of $20US monthly. The cooperative still makes most of the money for the village. If you go into China you will be surprised to find that cooperative family members own TVs, fax machines, VCRs, etc. "Computer" is their number one choice of ownership now - more important than cars.

As for "electricity" - wireless connects to computers and cooperative owned generators power most outlying villages. So, the picture of "affordability" in China is different than what is being painted here.

rude, by the way over 22 million people live in Shanghai. Shanghai is the fastest growing city in the world relative to the number of high rises. Hong Kong is ALSO part of China in which over 10 million people reside in and around. Average annual household income in HongKong is around $16,000US. Several southern Chinese provinces are steeped in new technology manufacturing facilities and new homes - very rapid growth - over 200 million people live in two southern provices where most of the technology growth is going own relative to manufacturing.

The Shanghai "huts" (so demured to in the US) are being replaced by middle class Hong Kong built homes.
