Paraphrased from the October 8, edition of the National Post

The United Nations has applauded an announcement by De Beers to suspend purchases of diamonds in Angola in an effort to dissociate itself from the civil war. It wants to remove any doubt that it is buying rebel diamonds. Canada and the UN have supported this move. Peter Takirambudde of the Human Rights Watch organization wars that this will only cut off funds to the Angolan Government and UNITA.

DeBeers controls 65-70% of the worlds diamond industry. This move would support efforts to "dry up" funds available for arms purchases. DeBeers also said it is giving serious consideration to halting purchases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Guinea.
