CD controller chips in short supply...........

Chip shortage looms as fabs try to cope with market demand

The supply of controller ICs for CD-ROM drives is expected to decline in the aftermath of September 21 earthquake that shook Taiwan.

With local wafer foundries in Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park suffering minimal to serious damages, Taiwan is expected to fall short of its pre-quake capacity of 50 million CD-ROM drives due to lack of drive controller ICs. Demand for these chips has been strong even before the tremor hit the island, with prices rising by 5 to 10 percent.

Meanwhile, SanDisk Corp. is expecting to lose 8 to 10 percent of the wafers that were being processed by its Taiwan foundry when the tremor occurred. According to President Eli Harari, their buffer inventory will be enough to sustain production in the last quarter of 1999. SanDisk currently outsources production of 128Mb and 256Mb Flash memory to United Microelectronics Corp. affiliate United Silicon Inc.

Pericom Semiconductor Corp., a supplier of high-speed and mixed-signal ICs, claims they can cope up with production targets with its non-Taiwan fabs. "We believe that current inventory, combined with increased production at our primary foundries in Singapore and South Korea, will keep our supply chain intact and enable us to meet demand in the last quarter,' says Alex Hui, company chairman, president and CEO.
