Human fossils show a clear progression of one species to another

I was under the impression that there are thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of transitions required to move from chimp to human, why search for the missing link when there would need to be so many missing links. Just because there are fossils of species that look like both chimps and humans does not mean that it is transitional... hmm.
