I can understand now how growing up in Alabama could leave a person a little bent.

Class drops restroom fee after parents complain

Oct. 1, 1999 | 9:05 p.m.

DAPHNE, Ala. (AP) -- A high school teacher who charged students 25 cents to go to the bathroom ended the practice after a student who didn't have the money soiled himself.

Sheila Floyd said her 14-year-old son could not go to to the restroom during Robert McKillion's computer class because he didn't have a quarter. The boy waited until the end of class but could not make it to the restroom in time.

''The teacher told him that he should have said it was an emergency,'' Mrs. Floyd said Thursday. ''He shouldn't have had to do that. Kids don't like to call attention to themselves.''

McKillion, who teaches at Daphne High School in southwest Alabama, did not return a call for comment Friday.

But Principal Barry Pennington said students in McKillion's four computer classes unanimously approved the charges. Pennington said the intention was to use the accumulated money for a pizza party at the end of the semester.

He also said students were not required to pay.

District Attorney David Whetstone said he would investigate.

''I don't believe you can take money from students to go to the bathroom, even if the payment is voluntary,'' Whetstone said. ''I'm quite sure we could not treat prisoners that way.''

Hi, jp. Sorry I missed the party! I would have to come as Claes Oldenburger. I brought some Zima's and art-ichoke mousse. I have benn bizzy taking care of fair weather things; even washed the car yesterday. It needed it, after two years or so. I can't remember if I've ever washed it before.....

I sure hope you're going to get that hand worked on now and not willy-wog. I've had a lot of surgeries and they've been a very good thing in my life. I mean, improvement. You can do it. Your arm needs you to help take care of it; you just have to do it.

I went five or seven months with a bad sore throat, when I didn't live at home, and I finally went to a Dr or a dentist or some thing (I forget) and I discovered I had tonsilitis, and out they had to come. Gee, no wonder it hurt and wouldn't get better. I had been miserable for quite a while, for nada.

Then I was all better. Losing an arm is awfully scary. We're not going to let you get away with it, so you better be good.

I'm going to get mad if we don't hear substantive narrative.

PS: Really like those Vaughan pictures!
