Well - now we've hit the nail right on the thumb, haven't we? This is the Tragedy of the 80s in a nutshell - the undeserved and yet unquestioned equivalency of FEELING safe, confident, proud ... with BEING these things.

Maybe this is an irreparable flaw of election by popularity. The candidate who makes the voters FEEL BETTER ... wins every time. And as a result I submit that the disconnection between popularity and competence has been made complete.

The way I vote now is by asking "which one of these bozos do I trust to put together a better coalition of advisors?"

<edit> I must admit however that an elementary measure of Presidential (or Congressional, or name-that-politico) fitness is indeed Getting Away With It. Nixon failed this test. And to my utter amazement Clinton got a C minus.
