Damn, Doug, that's powerful stuff you wrote. I totally agree even though I could not have expressed it as convincingly as you. Being born in '46, I can see the change in the media's presence and have long felt that it was a substantial part of the problems you just described. Thanks for helping me fill in some of my own thoughts.

Doug, that's pretty morose stuff. Are you the GAP's new marketing VP? -g-

Gloom has always been a fashionable segment, whether the gloomy would admit it or not, fashion is present even in the 'non-fashion'.
Even the "grunge" look can now be bought at 200% markup. Back in the day, however, we made our own grunge, and didn't need a capitalist profiteer to dress. Of course, those were less prosperous times and
now everybody does their patriotic duty to fold into the cash flow equation, spend money on trifles such as the $20 nike swoosh, recently discounted from $50. Remember "members only" brand? I trhink it was
an alligator on the pocket. My nephews had to have members only that
was in the Reagan boom years, it was the first I saw of the branding craze, followed shortly by Calvin Klein, etc.

The Gap believes it can create demand for fashion niches by these
commercials. They were encouraged, I suppose, by the swift rise of swing and copincidence, possible causal, with the Khaki freeze-frame commercial. Prior to leather they had painters overalls and this
awful combo touted by old navy. I think leather is too much of a stretch, however, and I doubt they have any real say in teen flavor-of-the-month fashion.

Doug, I do hope most teens choose sucky clothes designed by 50 year old fat men over suicide. <g>
