Ventura Has Cunning Plan To Become President
01:23 a.m. Oct 01, 1999 Eastern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Wrestler-turned-politician Jesse
Ventura attacked religious conservatives in a Playboy Magazine
interview released Thursday, and revealed a novel plan to win
the presidency.

If he decided to run for the White House, he would use his
experience in the ring to get his opponents to beat each other up
before jumping in at the final bell to claim victory.

``My plan would be to stay out of it until next July,' he said in
the November edition of Playboy magazine which hits the
newsstands Oct. 4.

``I would let (Democrat Al) Gore and (Republican George W.)
Bush hang each other with all the rope they have to the point
where the public can't stand either of them,' he said, stressing
this was a hypothetical scenario. ``Then you enter the race three
months before the election and take the whole thing!'

If nothing else, the governor of Minnesota and highest elected
official of the Reform Party, is a plain speaker, and in the
Playboy interview he sets his aim at everything from religion to
gun control and admits smoking marijuana.

He repeated his belief that prostitution should be legalized,
blaming organized religion for perpetuating a system under
which prostitutes are denied unions, benefits, health checks
``and anything any other worker gets.'

``Organized religion is a sham and crutch for weak-minded
people who need strength in numbers,' Ventura said. ``It tells
people to go stick their noses in other people's business. The
Religious Right wants to tell people how to live.'

On guns, the former U.S. Navy SEAL said: ``You want to
know my definition of gun control? Being able to stand there at
25 meters and put two rounds in the same hole. That's gun
control. Gun control people don't know what they're talking
about.'

On flag burning: ``If you buy the flag, it's yours to burn.'

On children: ``What do we value more today, our children or
our money? Most people would say the children, but that's not
true. We put our money in banks. Banks are guarded by armed
guards. We put our children in schools and protect them with
nothing.'

He also revealed that he has always been in love with Sophia
Loren; Ventura.

In the current debate about Bush's refusal to say whether he
ever used cocaine, Ventura is blase. ``I've smoked a joint and
there's nothing wrong with that. I have done far stupider things
on alcohol,' he said. ``Give somebody a Jimi Hendrix tape and
a joint and stick him in the corner and he's happy.'

By way of explaining his political positions, Ventura said: 'If
you're a Republican, you have to be fiscally and socially
conservative. If you're a Democrat, you have to be fiscally and
socially liberal. I'm half of each and that's the Reform Party.'

And explaining his differences with Pat Buchanan, who is flirting
with quitting the Republicans for the Reform Party, Ventura
said: ``He and I differ drastically on social issues.

``Mr Buchanan puts certain issues like abortion on the front
burner. We in the Reform Party do not. It's not a political issue.
It's been decided by the courts and it should be challenged in
the courts.'

>>>In the same interview, he defended the men in the
>>>Tailhook sexual harrassment scandal. Considering that
>>>he positioned himself as a fiscal conservative and social
>>>liberal, there's plenty of room to attack him from both
>>>sides on the religious freedom issue, the sexual
>>>harrassment issue, the legalized vice issues, and also
>>>his lack of commitment to the election process if he
>>>decides to come in at the last minute. The head of his
>>>own party has asked him to resign from the party.

>>>I understand Playboy's stand against religious
>>>conservatives in the past, and their own stand for
>>>legal prostitution. But their condoning of these
>>>views on sexual harrassment does nothing for their own
>>>cause.
