marc (Way OT), Anywhere East of the Mississippi or NW US probably calls for IFR qualification just to be safe. I feel really sorry for JFK,Jr. A whole series of events conspired to prevent him from taking off earlier and flying his whole trip VFR in daylight... marc and Steve (Steve has ridden the B-17G known as the "Texas Raider")- I was at the CAF Airshow in Midland this weekend-spectacular air show! At one point the CAF put 47 WWII Trainers (AT's, BT's and" Vultee Vibrators" in the air at the same time. Love the drone of massed WWII engines. They flew the only Curtis SBC2 HellDiver still flying, SBD Dauntlesses (2 of 3 left), Corsairs, Hellcats, Wildcats, Mustangs. They had a simulated paratroop assault by Airborne Guard with 80 paratroopers dropping from C130's, They also flew about 16 WWII bombers this year, B-17's, B-25's, A-26's, A-20's etc. (The B-29 "Fifi" was grounded for renovation). Steve-Where on earth did the Arizona Chapter ever find and renovate an orignal Heinkel 111 tactical Bomber? And Junker Transport? They should go after that ME-262 in storage at the National Air & Space Museum's Rockville warehouse... Guys I've never seen a P-47 Thunderbolt or P-38 Lightning at any air shows- are any flying still? The recreation of Pearl Harbor had dozens of planes in the air and the pyrotechnics (simulated bombs, strafing) was outstandingly well choreographed. The B1B Bomber flyover was impressive- that thing can haul at 700 feet altitude! But the F-15 and F-16 demos were much louder. Hey Steve! The Arizona Chapter of the CAF flies the B-17 "Sentimental Journey". I highly recommend this to everyone out there- for $120 they give you a ride at the air show on the old bird. I sat in the B-17's forward gunner's position- a great view on a historic crate... Definitely worth $120 taken from the earnings on all of the great tips from Big Dog and Slider here that help us Thread participants make a few dollars.... marc- I belong to a group known as the Gulf Coast Chapter of the League of World War One Aviation Historians. There's a big Atlantic Coast Chapter. We put out a Magazine called "Over the Front" dedicated to the origins of flying- ever here of that Group?
