Maryland is a border state, and about as many of its people fought for the Confederacy as the Union. On the Eastern Shore and in Southern Maryland, one can see that reflected, but there is, obviously, a lot of water under the bridge, and many demographic changes. I am, indeed, a Northerner, but I grew up in a neighborhood where we (the children) used to argue over which side we would have joined during the Civil War. I think that the Border States fall into a peculiar category, but as slave- holding states, they were reasonably considered "southern" at the time....
