Which of the following five numbers does not belong here?

1 3 9 27 243

Your answer is 243. You are right. If your answer is 1, you are also right.

Look at the above number. People are taught in math/algebra class and immediately notice that the group of number is a series, furthermore it is a geometric series. 243 does not belong there since the multiplier is 3.

People who analyze and have critical mind look beyond a series. They look it as a challenge, analyze it and conclude that 1 does not belong there since it is not divisable by 3. An obvious series does not satisfy the answer since there must be something beyond that. At a glance 243 does not strike to be divisible by 3, but further analysis shows that 2+4+3 = 9 is divisable by 3, hence only the number 1 must be the one to exclude. How about if it is 223 or 233 which are not divisible by 3.

The above just show how when you are presented with a problem, there are different ways to answer: you can just immediately jump to an obvious one or you can analyze it to no end. In the above question, both 1 and 243 are correct answer.

Paul

Note:

To those who are wondering what we are discussing, I am merely illustrate that many highly educated people or overly educated people tend to analyze problems and try to find the complex solutions since these people think that the more complex the formula is, the higher the return would be. That is where Dell wins against competitors: keep it simple: be direct instead of going through channels with various tactics such as rebates, trade-ins, channel stuffing etc.
