In general, I believe that schema is the most important aspect of interoperable directory applications ... so this is good!

This is a good move ... schema and storage of information needs to be completely abstracted from the access protocols. What this means is that I should be able to access the information using LDAP or *any other* directory access protocol. If this is possible, they have done a good job ... the information should not be tied to a single access method or protocol ... that would be poor design.

I agree with this also ... it's a ways out. Also, the "solution" will probably be more about "throttling" users ... I'm not a big fan of excessively managing users ...
