Thoughts On Novell..... >>As I recall, about three month ago, you and Toy sounded a little skeptical about Novell. It has been in a struggle since then (a coincidence, I am sure). Then, you resumed your characteristic postings as if nothing was. Do you still have a negative hunch about the company? Is is time to get back in for someone who sold much higher than this ridiculous close on Friday? Or is the big ape going after this company again with X2000?!!>> I am ready to buy more Novell at these levels. The market is very confused. Recent departures are being interpreted as a sign talent is jumping ship. But the fact is, Novell is in the process of giving birth to a thousand ships, an IP Armada of sorts. We are passing through another dark period, a flux point where the world of IP is fast moving into a completely new phase of hyper growth which will be fueled by the insatiable thirst for instant digitized information. The good news is that the entire telecom industry will completely unravel while this process gets underway - which it already has. This process will release an enormous amount of new energy into the bandwidth game. In addition to Novell I am placing my money in companies that are going to offer expanded IP services to this thirsty band of CLECs and ISPs who have to leg into a new ball game to survive. Note how some of the big investment funds are snatching up CLECs right and left. Why? Because they know that in their attempt to bundle products in packages, the Big 3 will miss the market for expanded IP services that can be clicked on and off with the touch of a mouse. We will NOT be buying applications anymore. We will be buying bandwidth within which there will be a complete range of clickable expanded services. And the collection of expanded services which gives off the most energy and value we refer to as "smart bandwidth." And from a commercial value perspective, this is where Novell and NDS will really begin to shine. Novell must lauch a thousand IP ships filled with different slices of IP-based expanded services. Existing telecom companies are trapped in the private switched game. Even Cisco knows their component glory days are over. The technology you see parading around the trade shows over the next few years will be highly more personal in nature for we are entering a "new phase" where open, fluid, scalable IP services will be offered up in customized tapestries that fit the company and end user. Like Novell, every company will be forced to look at what they have invested in their enterprise strategies and find some way to leverage that into pure IP solutions for expanded services. Expanded Services. Expanded Services. Expanded Services. That's where all the money will go. This is the IP Revolution I've been talking about. I spoke at a conference here in Chicago this week where operations and IT professionals from institutions and planned sponsors gathered to learn more about Online Servicing. The conference was dull and dry and filled with typical consultative fare. When I speak I get the gauntlet out and turn people upside down. For that's how you have to "see" the world these days if you are going to begin to understand where all of this is going. I'm speaking again at another conference in NYC and I'll do the same thing. Hit people over the head. Wake them up. Tell them what the net is all about. It's NOT about technology. It's simply ALL about communications which unbundle data and information in the pursuit of knowledge which MUST be shared for the new platforms of growth are networks and communities. Thought, spirit, creativity, innovation and energy are the drivers. Risk, energy and enthusiasm is the "new fuel." Why? Because for the Internet model to run it must have a catalyst, someone, something, sometime that "transforms" and excites people into talking, gathering, sharing and growing in ways which ADD value to everyone - not just for the companies which are offering the technology. Technology companies are going to have to learn the values of community, trust, energy, truth and spirit. For technology really doesn't matter as much anymore. As I said, the only thing that really matters is TIME and TRUST. Someday I will probably find myself inside Novell or Microsoft shaking the same foundations. We are moving in completely new directions right now. It's really very very exiciting to be part of what's happening especially in our industry, financial services. The deals out there are amazing. We are involved with three telecommunication deals right now - 2 from a development perspective and one simply as a bandwidth broker. There is an unbelievable arbitrage from Old to New that's just getting underway in telecom. Lucent, Seimens, Nortel and even Cisco will have to radically revamp their future direction if they are going to have a chance of taming this Tsunami. I really like Novell for it's stability and the extreme high quality of their NDS offering and their ability of their technology to transport, objectify and factor data in a robust, secure ways. Can you feel my energy and excitement?? There's always more....but it's time to jump. Peace. GO!!
