Re: new upstarts giving away pc's... Those companies will collapse.

Nobody's giving away PCs. They're charging $1080 for $360 worth of internet acces, and including a $500 PC to make up the difference (or variation on same). It's a scam and a terrible deal, and it seems to be dying off as they run out of illiterates who can't read a sales agreement.

Re: how good are these machines as SERVERS?
CPU often isn't the most important factor on a server since DMA transfers between disk controller, network card, and ram are the constraints. Limits here are often in the chipset and Intel hasn't been having a good month in this area.

The server space is where Athlon may have a big advantage since it uses the proven Alpha EV6 point to point high speed bus. It is possible that for some uses, a single Athlon server will outperform a quad Xeon or Coppermine server due to its use of the EV6 chipset architecture.

Although I probably don't need the speed of an Athlon & lord knows I couldn't get one even if I were in the market to buy a computer, the IBM computers using the Athlon chips are loaded with features. They make a very attractive machine. But, then again, you can't buy one and take it home. That's been AMD's problem and will always be AMD's problem.
