Herc, in very simple terms, dense wavelength division multiplexing is a means employed by carriers to multiply the effective carrying capacity of an individual strand of fiber. By using DWDM, multiple virtual fiber paths can be created where only one existed, previously. These days each of these paths is conveniently said to be its own "color" of the spectrum. In the end, the fiber carries multiple colors, and each of them is individually selectable and usable for a different purpose at the [single physical] fiber's end points.
