What would be different?
Abolish public education? ARE YOU KIDDING? That is the most stupid idea i've seen on these threads and you have a lot of competition. Our economy would be wreck in less than a generation. Our biggest growth industry would be selling chicklets on the street to the rich Canadians that come over to view the disaster.

One of the founding principals of our democracy is the belief that every person has the right to a free education. It is that right that makes possible the freedoms we seek to enjoy. A free, state funded education has been a great American tradition far longer than decentralization.

<<Parents who really wanted their kids to absorb the Darwinian
philosophy would be free to have their own schools; Christian
parents would have their own schools too.

What would be different? Obviously the statists would lose
their privileged status and their huge captive audience. They
would be forced to compete on equal terms with people they
prefer to rule as intellectual serfs. It's odd that Darwinians
should be so afraid of competition! >>

Whoa... Why do you assume that "Darwinians" are afraid of competition and opposed to private schools? I am 100% a "Darwinian", and I also believe that the state run school system should be scrapped in favor of many private schools, all funded by a combination of vouchers from students plus whatever cash tuition, grants from churches, Darwinians, etc they can obtain. I say let there be a little Darwinian "survival of the fittest" applied to the school system. Why would "Darwinians" be "statists"? Just the opposite, those who believe in Darwin's ideas would be more likely to accept a vigorous and competitive system of many different private schools, each vying for students as best they can, and let the school who attracts the most, or best, students, survive.
