Actually, Steven, I was not referring to U.S. government action or inaction but to the rulers of China. That said, I would amend my use of the term, "right thing to do" to your term, "only thing to do."

IMO, China was staring revolution squarely in the face and acted to maintain the existing order. We could go on and on about this, and, perhaps we will in days to come.

Had the existing powers wavered and turned in their badges and guns, I think the result would have been chaos and MANY revolutions. Every life lost in Tianamin (I have no idea how to spell it and no intention of checking at this hour) would have been multiplied by tens of thousands had the government not established firm control.

Maybe it would have been worth it. I don't know but am willing to say, I think not.
