Recent media articles and musings from traders continue to imply that MSFT is selling or "incorrectly", buying options on its stock in the open market. The put warrant program affects the market only if those independent third parties hedge their transaction with MSFT by buying options for themselves in the open market

I think this is probably the way it unfolds in the open markets. Even a lot of the options experts quoted in news article just assume MSFT is active in the open market. Third Parties hedging sounds like a reasonable explanation. Maybe the people quoted are aware that MSFT has made the transaction with the 3rd parties resulting in open market transactions later on----must be hard to keep to keep a secret when big trades take place.

Another way to understand is that the media is actually correct in th final analysis but have missed a few details along the way.
