That poll is wrong. Schroeder's government is less popular than Kohl's in its' worst time. Schroeder (the person) is still a little more popular than Kohl at his worst. But he is getting dismounted by his long time rival Oskar lafontaine in a very bad and crude manner right now. Lafontaine's book published on Wednesday was only stopped from top news by Guenter Grass getting the Nobel prize for literature. On Sunday morning, Lafontaine was back with a vengeance.

Schroeder's popularity problem now might prove temporary, as for a long time tradition, German chancellors are least popular around one year after election. Then they turn around their boats and pay more social money and do other popular things. If everything goes right, they are back top six weeks before next election.

This has always been the way with Kohl. However Schroeder's problem is not popularity with voters, but his own party. If he proves able to ride this mustang for another year, I assume he will be more popular than at his before-election high and maybe even get some influence on his party.

Let's wait and see.

And, ah yes, the PDS is heavily flirting with the Greens on the federal level. Ekim Deligoez (MP, The Greens) didn't have much to say why they opposed PDS's opinions in educational policies on Friday ...

Apart from the poll (mis-)understanding, in my view a very good article, describing what I see and feel around here.

I am third-generation Buddenbrooks, BTW.
