One thing that SanDisk seems to do as a matter of policy is to bring out higher and higher capacity cards as the manufacturing technology improves. That is why there have been so many models of flash cards in the past (capacity-wise). This suggests to me that SanDisk is doing exactly what you believe is desirable - get the most out of the factory in line with what the patented technology allows. This policy also has to do with the cost of obtaining chips suitable for higher capacities. As the manufacturing process improves, the cost goes down because there are fewer wasted products.
