Sigma Phoenix (India) begins production

NEW DELHI, Oct. 3

SIGMA Phoenix (India) Pvt. Ltd (SPIL) has commenced production of anti-vibration rubber parts at its modern Indo-German joint venture plant located at Mohali in Punjab.

The company is a 50:50 joint venture between Sigma Corporation (India) Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of automobile rubber parts in the country, and Phoenix AG, a global major in the field of automobile rubber parts.

According to an SPIL release, the plant which has been set up with equity and technical expertise from the German partner, involved a capital outlay of Rs. 20 crores. The entire plant and machinery has been imported from Germany, and as per the agreement, the technology is to be updated by Phoenix AG for the next 50 years.

The release also mentioned that about 75 per cent of the production, which will mainly cater to the automobile industry and the railways, will be exported back to Phoenix for European vehicles and the balance 25 per cent of the products will be sold to the upcoming domestic vehicle manufacturers including Telco, Mercedes Benz, Ford, GM Opel and Honda for their requirements in the domestic and overseas markets.

The company claimed that the products manufactured at its Mohali plant will have European OEM (original equipment manufacturer) quality. The newly set up joint venture company is expected to export products worth Rs. 35 crores in the first year 1999-2000. In the second year, it expects to increase its exports to Rs. 45 crores, the release said.

Sigma Corporation (India), a 100 per cent export-oriented unit (EOU), is currently the largest manufacturer and exporter of automobile anti-vibration mounts and rubber parts, air brake systems and sheet metal components from the country with an export turnover of Rs. 40 crores. It is a 35-year old, ISO 9002 company with a Government recognised `export house' status.

The company is having manufacturing facilities in Delhi and Gurgaon and exports its entire production to the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, South Africa, South America, Korea and Japan.
