Not being a Texan, I'm not familiar with the nuances of Texas Tech, Baylor, Rice, etc. fandom. But in the case of the Texas/Texas A&M rivalry, they are the two oldest schools in the state, and there is a culture clash as well. Texas is the avant garde liberal college, Texas A&M clings stubbornly to their several traditions. They were an all-male military school until relatively recently and they take certain traditions from that era pretty seriously. They don't have pep rallies, they have yell practice. Their fight song is a song written by an A&M graduate who died on the field of battle in WWI. They're steeped in tradition, and Texas is always poking fun at them about it.
