Thanks for your comments, and I shall look towards video now. If this thread suggests single-shots are not the way, then that's impressive. I think the way to go is to video the everything, and select later.

With respect to video, ideally I'd like to be able to scan quickly for beginning and end of each set, then find frames at particular intervals. At those intervals, individuals could be identified, then measured. I'm aware of a screen-grabber that would digitize the appropriate frames, and then measurement would be easy if the chute* were marked for calibration.

I wonder if digitization is necessary though. If a single monitor could display the video and simultaneously serve as a computer screen, then it seems to me that the measurement and calibration could be obtained directly.

I'm interested that the speed of these cameras is relatively slow, although 100 asa would probably be OK for the quality we need. Isn't that about the same as modern videos? What limits the sensitivity of digital cameras? Is there a threshold for the density of photons that before triggering a record?
