He liked to jam, but I don't think he was the best, maybe the best non 10 finger picker there ever was. Hendrix probably revolutionized the guitar like no other guitarist and Clapton probably was more versatile. The list of musician the guy has jammed with is long and impressive.

One other name to throw on this list, I once caught Roy Clark in a jam session where he hit some blue riffs that were just unbelievable. I don't know if it was the fact that I was totally caught off guard with a Hee-Haw regular, but the guy really put on a deep range of picking that I still remember. In some regards, he and Garcia where of the same background musically, which was bluegrass.
