I'm sure Jorg Haider's already the role model to be emulated by Belgium's Flemish far right.... Southern, French-speaking Belgium is not prey to ethnic nationalism. However, this is not to say that Latin Europeans are more immune to xenophobia than Germanic fellows: one of the first European political leaders to have sent his congrats to Haider was French Bruno Megret, leader of MN (Mouvement National). The biggest problem, in my view, with the rise of Europe's far-right, is its pervasive effect on mainstream politics. Such a phenomenon is already at work in Belgium --actually in Flanders-- where the Flemish Christian Democrats are tuning in their agenda on the Vlaams Blok's. If J. Haider successfully manages to take over the Austrian chancellery --as he has demanded-- it will set a serious precedent in Europe's political landscape: A EU-member country serving as a statesmanship showcase for the far right as a whole, with Haider epitomizing the first, post-WWII, far-right leader ruling over a West European country --his putative good governance will benefit the credentials of other would-be Haiders in Europe.... Milosevic in Serbia, Lebed in Russia, Haider in Austria, Philip Dewinter in Flanders, Le Pen/Megret in France, Fini/Bossi in Northern Italy, who's next? Gus.

Monday October 4 10:46 AM ET Jewish Graves Desecrated In Berlin BERLIN (Reuters) - More than 100 graves were desecrated at Europe's largest Jewish cemetery during the weekend, Berlin's Jewish Community organization said Monday.
