Both networks have large "cache farms" installed which are used to "front-end" the access of their users to the Internet. So when you are on their networks, you are most likely always going through their caches.

Now they are adding all sorts of new services to these caches. Some of the examples that were mentioned are "transformation" applications. This is where they are working to "transform" objects as they pass through caches. For example, they might change a 128Kbps audio stream to a 32Kbps audio stream on the fly. This would allow the cache to store a higher resolution version, while passing the lower resolution version to the user. This is just one example ...

Both companies heavily endorse Inktomi because of it's application development platform capabilities. Also because of the UNIX platform that it runs on.
