Dear TTP: To be able to detect a fraudulent transaction from a billion, all one has to decide on certain criteria, which can then translated into a SQL query and run against a VLDB. For eg, you could create a criteria in the auto-insurance world looking for claims from the same person for the same amount of damage to the bumpers. This guy could be doing insurance fraud scam. To create a query, which can run against a database which tracks this data is definitely doable. If you look at the CLUE database (offered by ChoicePoint) which currently does track claim information for each person for the likes of GEICO, you would know what I mean. BTW, ChoicePoint has signed up with Microstrategy. Creating SQL queries is the strength of this ROLAP company. Such SQL queries are a proven way of returning reports against the ton of data (Teradata size databases) as opposed to MOLAP, and DOLAP technologies. Cognos does MOLAP. So did Arbor. Information Advantage used to ROLAP, but now they have been acquired. Let me address your other concern: Consulting by BIG FOUR. There are tons of software companies which have a revenue and resources in the range that MSTR has. A number of companies have resorted to this business model, whereby the consulting is done by the Big Four, so that implementation of their resouces become scalable. If you look at any good medium sized software product company, they have strong relationships with BIG FOUR consulting companies, which provide resource scalability. This way, the companies are able to use their resources on creating the next generation of products, and not just do CONSULTING. MSTR IS NOT A CONSULTING COMPANY. If you had my experience of working with clients who install COTS software, you might appreciate that clients expect "custom developed software' even though they buy COTS software. Apples and Oranges, I say. If a customer does buy COTS software, and then wants to change how it looks, and operates, then it is going to take time to accomplish that. BTW, DAYTON HUDSON IS REALLY OLD NEWS. The SQL that the MSTR SQL engine creates are database specific SQL. You mention Best Buy. Could you specifically say that the projects are late because of MSTR products? If you could be specific, and avoid speculation, we could appreciate it. Saylor is not in business of doing MAGIC. He is in the businesss of leveraging existing technologies, and creating new ones to deliver business value. His production accounts have demonstrated scalability. Give him credit for savvy marketing, and good PR. They play an important role in the long-term success of any company. While we are on the topic of the company itself, would you care to comment of other functions of the company like Recruiting, leadership, motivation, etc in all of which the company has excelled. BTW, when we say "reference list", it means that the customer is willing to vouch for the product. Cheers sadsack.
